Montrose Basin is the 750 hectare enclosed estuary of the South Esk river. Virtually untouched by industrial development and pollution, the Basin provides a rich feeding ground for thousands of resident and migrant birds.
The daily tide cycle and passing seasons, each with its own characteristic pattern of birds - winter and summer visitors and passage migrants - ensure something new and different every month of the year.
From here you might see eider ducks, pink-footed and greylag geese, otters and much more.
In summer the Basin is home to curlews, oystercatchers, eider ducks and lots more. In autumn, the Basin resounds with the calls of thousands of migrant geese.
There are magnificent views of wildlife on the Basin through high powered telescopes and binoculars. Television cameras bring the wildlilfe literally into the centre!
Unique displays show how a tidal basin works and the routes of migrating birds.
There are lots of buttons to press, boxes to open, touch tables and binocular microscopes to view beasties.
The Centre shop is a delight, with exciting and unusual gifts, including a good selection of bird feeders, bird food and a full range of binoculars and telescopes.
A nearby hide provides the scent of sea-air as well as close views of the wildlife.
