The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) is dedicated to
enhancing knowledge and understanding of Scotland's whales, dolphins
and porpoises (cetaceans) and the Hebridean marine environment through education,
research and working within local communities as a basis for the lasting
conservation of local species and habitats.
The west coast of Scotland is one of the most important for whale and
dolphin biodiversity in Europe. Twenty four species have been recorded in
the area; from the tiny harbour porpoise to the mighty blue whale. If you
are planning a holiday on Mull visit the visitor centre and shop in
Tobermory to find out about HWDT, cetaceans and other Scottish marine life.
The visitor centre is full of information about cetaceans, including the
species found in local waters and the best places to view marine life.
HWDT have staff on hand to answer any questions you may have and
direct you towards commercial boat operators for an amazing day out.
Throughout the summer months, HWDT carry out acoustic and visual
surveys on board their yacht Silurian. People are invited to participate and
experience first hand life on board a research vessel. Silurian also doubles
up as a 'floating classroom' to deliver HWDT educational outreach
program to schools on neighboring islands.
