The Castle of St. John is a grim 16th century towerhouse in the very centre of Stranraer. It was used as a government base during the "Killing Times" of the 1680s and was later converted into the town jail. Displays and videos tell the story of the castle, the Covenanters and the Victorian prison.
 
Open Easter-mid September, Mon-Sat, 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm.
 
Admission free.
 
Not accessible to wheelchair users.
