The Isle of May on the May Princess![]() | |||
|
How do we get to the island? The May Princess sails from Anstruther harbour to the Isle of May from May to October. The May Princess is licensed to carry 100 passengers with saloon, upper viewing deck, snack bar and toilets. What is it like? There are impressive vertical cliffs all along the west coast teeming with seabirds in early summer. The island is treeless and rugged, but there are paths which allow you to visit all parts without difficulty. There is a small information centre and toilet on the island. What preparations? It is always advisable to take warm waterproof clothing and comfortable shoes for walking. Take refreshments with you although hot drinks and light refreshments are available onboard. Dogs are not allowed on the island. How long is the trip? The crossing takes 45 mins to 1 hour including a cruise round the island to catch sight of the large colony of grey seals basking on the rocks. On most trips you can land and spend 2 to 3 hours ashore exploring this unique sanctuary viewing the abundance of wildlife in their natural habitat. Time ashore depends on sea and tide conditions on the day. (Landings are not guaranteed.) What is there to see and do? In early summer the seacliffs are covered with breeding Kittiwakes, Razorbills, Guillemots and Shags. Inland, thousands of burrow nesting Puffins can be seen and Eider duck are abundant. There are usually breeding Terns and there is also a colony of grey seals. Last year over a thousand pups were born on the island.
You can visit the remains of the 12th century monastery, which has been excavated as part of a 4 year archaeological programme aimed at interpreting the historic environment of the island. Remains of human exploitation of the island have been found dating back over 2000 years. There are also a number of wartime installations, but most buildings are associated with the lighthouses, including one of the first ever built in Scotland. Is the island suitable for school outings? We recommend the Isle of May for school parties provided there is adequate supervision. The magnificent cliff scenery can be enjoyed in perfect safety by keeping to marked routes and bird observation points. Are there guides on the island? Throughout the summer the May Princess is met by Wardens of Scottish Natural Heritage. They are there to help you enjoy your visit and will be pleased to answer your questions. Orientation boards at each landing should help you to find your way around. Travel Directions: Anstruther is on the A917 on the Fife coast. |
